I reacted strongly to the wording in the article “Traffic smooth despite expo” (published in Shanghai Daily on August 25) where the “smooth” traffic on the streets was compared to the crowded situation in the metro.

How can 20 kilometers per hour be called smooth? On the highway it ought to be at least 60 kilometers per hour to be called smooth.

How will Shanghai ever get its residents to abandon their cars if the metro is thus downplayed?

It’s great that the government has managed to put in this many new subway lines this year and the only problem is that there ought to be more!

In the meantime, while there are more subway lines being built it is not more highways that Shanghai needs but better,，ugg boots， more and faster bus communication.

HK land auction draws high price

HONG Kong sold a piece of land yesterday at a price that was a third above forecasts, indicating that the city’s property sector could still be frothy even after cooling measures were announced weeks ago.

More rain and wind on horizon

Potato starch imports in probe

CHINA started an anti-subsidy investigation into imports of potato starch from the European Union, the first countervailing investigation against the EU, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.
